For years he had been the obedient underling of one of the Camorra bosses Aniello La Monica.

He was present at a summit meeting of mafiosi in the early s, when his boss parlayed with Sicilian Mafia boss Michele Greco. Di Lauro was among the mourners after La Monica was murdered inwhen the shopkeepers of Secondigliano hauled down their shutters as a sign of respect. Di Lauro's grief was in no way diminished by the fact that, as several supergrasses informers have since claimed, he was implicated in his boss's murder.

He was arrested for the first time induring a Camorra summit in the Neapolitan neighbourhood of Forcellawith other members of the Giuliano clan. Di Lauro, the head of the Camorra clan that ran the northern suburbs, presided over a tightly managed drug empire that imported cocaine and heroin and distributed it through an army of dealers. In exchange for the monopoly and steady cuts of the proceeds, Di Lauro granted neighborhood ringleaders a certain amount of autonomy.

Despite a niggling and semi-permanent feud with nearby Licciardi clanDi Lauro kept his couriers — "the Spaniards" as they are widely known because of their endless trips ferrying cocaine from Galicia in Spain — and his street pushers and the other components of his empire under brutally tight control. He funnelled the proceeds into real estate, buying dozens of flats in Naples, owning shops in France and the Netherlands, as well as businesses importing fur, fake fur and lingerie.

Ina Camorra war broke out between the Di Lauro clan and the so-called " secessionists " Italian "scissionisti" led by Raffaele Amatoa breakaway fraction from the once all-powerful Di Lauro clan in the northern suburbs of Naples that tried to assert its control over drugs and prostitution rackets in the area. The feud caused widespread public revulsion against the Camorra and led to a major crackdown by the authorities, resulting in the capture and imprisonment of Paolo Di Lauro and his sons Ciro b.

La Monica noted Di Lauro's sharp, mathematical brain and in invited him to work for his organisation as book-keeper. Di Lauro began to appreciate the money that bosses such as La Monica were making from organised crime but soon realised he could be making more.

An old-fashioned Camorrista, La Monica was happy to reap the proceeds of black market cigarettes, the corrupt construction industry and protection rackets but shied away from the growing drugs market. A narrow street in the Spanish quarter of Naples From time to time, Di Lauro would urge his boss to move into heroin and cocaine, where he could make much bigger profits.

Eventually his patience ran out and, inwith La Monica still refusing to be persuaded, he set about removing him from power. Not a man inclined to employ violent tactics as a first resort, Di Lauro hoped he could turn La Motta's supporters against him by spreading stories among clan members that he had been cheating them out of their rightful share of profits.

But La Monica learned about his treachery and hired two professional killers to track him down. Di Lauro escaped and his retaliation revealed his own cold, ruthless side. Peter Baker had established himself as an excellent writer of political history. He puts situations in prospective and fleshes out the politics and motives. The acknowledgments section clearly states that this coffee-table, overly illustrated, oversized tome 5 lbs by weight was the creation of the New York Times as a show piece, and not the serious Obama biography that Baker might want to write.

I belong to a small group of readers that are also making our way through the presidential list. Your site has become an indispensable resource for us and is always our first reference. We have great discussions on many different topics but invariably come back to the discussion of what makes a great leader or president.

Do you have thoughts and time to share a few of your ideas on this topic? I am also wondering if you might be able to recommend a few good books that compare presidents and their leadership traits? Thanks again so very much.
